The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed the reinstatement of chemical safety regulations that were revoked during President Trump’s administration. Rules had been imposed by President Obama’s administration that required production plants to disclose potential chemical safety threats to the public. President Trump’s administration rescinded this rule, saying it put undue burden on manufacturing and could provide chemical information to terrorists.
President Biden’s administration is proposing the disclosure of chemical threats to those that live within 6 miles of production plants, limiting the spread of chemical information while providing it to those potentially impacted by it. “This rule will better protect communities from chemical accidents, and advance environmental justice for communities that have been disproportionately impacted by these facilities,” EPA Administrator Michael Regan stated.
